Every technological advancement throughout world history has fundamentally changed the character of the executive.
Human languages are a natural emergence of the predisposed framework for intelligence in our brains. Their emergence into speaking, reading, and writing allowed for the existence of knowledge upon which the human collective is now the paramount force of the living.
Writing on paper improved long-term memories of the human collective. Before writing, memory was confined to individuals. Now, people can express themselves, develop representations of their experiences on a surface, develop knowledge through them, and most importantly, read what’s written by others.
Papers allowed for sharing large memory across people, and they established a direct line of connection from one end to another. There’s a journalist, translator, and delivery. These papers, once shared, had a forever impression. People and their smaller collective units had autonomy over how they process and act on what’s written with respect to others.
Telegrams allowed that to spread faster, but in shorter and more fleeting memories. Newspapers allowed for a slower spread, but with longer and more accurate memories. Railroads, ships, aero planes, phones, satellites, software, internet, etc, allowed these characteristics orders of magnitude bigger. Each of these innovations fundamentally transformed our executive in their abilities to make the right decisions.
AI now allows people new interactions between their intelligence and memory. AI allows us to copy nuanced portions of units across several ones to form a new thing. Like cooking. It almost feels like “Oh, here is all the stuff to make lunch, you mix them, and then it forms the lunch”. But there are a lot of subtle things that need to happen for the lunch to really be tasty in a certain way. You can meet the same thing with the same ingredients in so many ways. AI allows us to interact with units, something like this. It’s the thing that brings a certain taste.
The copy mechanism is sometimes faster and better than humans. It allows for filling gaps where humans do not know how to fill, or they don’t even realize that they need to fill. This is very empowering when you take up a job. You have to learn things on the job to fill the voids in your learning or lack of exposure. Now, that discrete experiences are smoothened into a continuous curve. In software engineering, for instance, engineers who focus on one thing, like UI implementation, and need some understanding of the other things, like DevOps, now have a much easier time on their weak areas.
The copy mechanism allows for developing a large memory of the collective. Access to a large shared memory improves decisions that need a broad consensus. It potentially leads to making more right decisions. For example, plenty of great science research is trapped in native European languages in which the authors participated, whose language, even in some Old English, is hard to comprehend. These can now be translated, made available in shape of choosing.
AI trained on everyone’s text implicitly captures characteristics with varying levels of granularity and accuracy. They are roughly refreshed every year and instantly by trading off granularity, accuracy and their ability to communicate with the collective.
It’s probably going to be possible to permanently retain a digital clone of someone’s mind. In refreshing frequently and by retaining far beyond the original’s existence, it has significantly reduced the misrepresentations that grow while copying and decaying effects along time. You could have perfect representations of institutional knowledge from the past, and that’s pretty empowering. Writing laws really improved our ability to retain and the integrity of institutional knowledge, allowing for reasoning across long time scales. AI is going to make this possible on a collective level with a perspective broader than the law. It allows everyone to have access to more collective knowledge.
The copy mechanism is never perfect. For it, human must negotiate the intent with AI. The new intelligence has it’s own agency and goals distinct from the humans. The copy’s integrity follows how much the AI and humans are aligned and able to communicate. A perfectly cloned human is a perfectly aligned AI, twice amplifying the individual. Amplifying deeper individual characteristics, such as writing speed, has an even more compounding magnitude but with focused effects on that one individual.
Mathematics is showing signs of an increase in the spread of collective knowledge. The AI is allowing mathematicians to write lemmas faster than before. They are able to focus and succeed more in what they want to prove more broadly.
Unless there is less to be discovered in the universe, we are looking at an increase in the growth rate of discoveries, increased mistakes, and hopefully not burning the forest. That means growing collective knowledge in an increasingly chaotic environment. It’s almost like the moment when Bruce Banner becomes the Hulk, hopefully the one in the Avengers series.
